Critter Details

Slinky is a very lucky juvenile feral pigeon who was found by staff and a horse barn stuck on the ground with a broken wing. A volunteer picked him up intending to bring him to a wildlife rehab. After quickly examining the wing, the volunteer located a scabbed open fracture at the ‘elbow’ joint, which was no longer functional. Slinky was not going to be a candidate for release back into the feral flock. Within the first hour at the volunteer’s home, Slinky was standing in her knee, nibbling her shirt, and attacking her finger whenever she tried to gently push him off of her. Slinky was quickly brought to an avian vet for assessment of the wing and possible amputation. Necrotic sections of the humerus were removed with appropriate analgesia, and the wound was cleaned and bandaged. He is being closely monitored by his vet for any indications of a bone infection, which would push us to have the wing amputated, but so far it looks like he can probably keep the wing. Radiographs revealed an additional fracture that is already very nicely healed. Slinky has been healing and resting in foster care, where he has shown himself to have an adorable snuggly personality and to be a bit of a homebody; anywhere he has once snuggled in a blanket, he is very likely to return to for further snuggling. He’s a tough little guy (more bark than bite) who complains loudly when another bird is hogging the bath bowl but doesn’t do much else. We are very happy to see Slinky recovering from his injuries and now living the soft life in foster care. Please apply to adopt http://www.pigeonrescue.org/birds/apply-to-foster-or-adopt/
