Please contact Paul Slebzak (pauls@luckydoganimalrescue.org) for more information about this pet.sweet island girl looking for her forever home! PATTY NEEDS A FOREVER HOME!!!!       Name:   Patty       Best Guess for Breed:  Terrier and Lab mix  Best Guess for Age:   9 months as of Sept. 2024        SEX:    Female   Approximate Weight:  35.8 lbs as of 9/24/24; likely is still growing!   Gets Along With:    Patty does well with other dogs and has lived with dogs in foster care. Patty lives with kids in foster care and does very well with them. We have tested Patty with some of the cats at the shelter, and she did not seem particularly interested in chasing or pouncing on the cat. While this is a positive sign that Patty could live with a cat, she has not done so to our knowledge. If you have cats in your home, we are happy to discuss with you how to best introduce a new pup to your pack!   Currently Living at:  DC area foster home   Special adoption considerations:    After being rescued from the streets, she was very scared and shut down. However, she has been making great strides. We think Patty would do best with either a resident dog or a family who can make sure she can go on walks regularly with other dogs, visit the dog park, or go to doggie daycare to continue to build confidence.Patty is unique in that, like many white animals, she is deaf.  This will require some alternative training techniques that involve visual cues.   As with any dog, training a deaf dog takes time and patience. There are some ways in which deaf and hearing dogs learn quite similarly. Repetition, reward, and consistency remain the pillars of success.  She also may startle more easily. This is a congenital abnormality and should have no medical impact on her.    Patty is Looking For:    Meet Patty, a sweet 9-month-old female with a soft white coat with tan accents! She is one of a litter of five – Padma, Panda, Patty, Peeps – who all came up from a Puerto Rico shelter to find their forever homes here. Patty may be deaf, but that doesn’t stop her from being an affectionate and playful companion. She has a curious spirit and loves exploring her surroundings, making every moment spent with her full of joy. Patty is currently in a shelter in Puerto Rico, where she has won the hearts of everyone with her gentle nature and eagerness to connect with people.  Being deaf doesn’t slow Patty down one bit—she’s ready to start learning hand signals. She thrives in a calm, patient environment and would do well with a family that is willing to continue her training and provide the love and attention she deserves. If you’re looking for a loyal and loving companion, Patty would make a perfect addition to your family!  What My Foster Says About Me:  Patty is such a sweetie! She was clearly confused when she arrived after the long trip from Puerto Rico (including a 15-hour van trip) but her tail was wagging the entire time on the car ride home and she was looking out the windows eagerly (she is good in the car!). I have a dog that’s a quarter of her size and she played with him very happily – she enjoys being around other dogs, especially playful ones. And within a few hours she was asking me for pets – and asking again every time I removed my hand. She particularly likes behind the ear and neck scratches. And takes treats from my hand oh so gently.    I saw on arrival that she hadn’t been taught any hand signals in the shelter – she didn’t know to make eye contact with me. But she picked up on that very fast and was making eye contact with me by the next morning, watching me to see what I was using my hands to tell her. Right now, so many things about living in a home, leash walking, etc., are new to her. But she’s so, smart, food motivated, and attentive to her humans that she will thrive with training and socialization.
