Lulu came in two weeks ago as an owner surrender because she has a couple chronic health conditions that her family was not able to continue managing. She is an absolute bundle of joy, puppy energy, and love for everyone she meets, and lived with a kiddo, another dog, and a few farm cats…..she is just looking for a special family to help her grow up and fulfill her potential! Over the course of her short life she has already had multiple urinary tract infections (UTI’s) and had to take a few different antibiotics to try and tackle the infections. The family said she always seemed to recover from one infection, and then before long another one would begin :( They were working with their vet and culturing the urine to determine which antibiotic she needed, however the most recent infection did not respond to the antibiotic that should have worked, and the family was out of options that they could manage. In addition to this issue, Lulu also struggles with recurrent ear infections, often in her right ear – and her right rear paw also has a yeast infection on it because she uses that foot to scratch up at her right ear and the yeast had spread to her foot now. Luckily her ear infection that she came in with does seem to be responding to normal treatment. We are also currently treating the yeast infection on her rear paw and hope that it responds to the antifungal medication and her hair will regrow and match the rest of her adorable body! Her original family loved her very much, and truly only wanted the best for her – they just knew they could no longer provide what she needed to hopefully get and stay healthy, so they asked Safe Haven to take her in. We started by consulting with Lulu’s original vet and then we did perform the imaging she had been hoping to get done for Lulu. Luckily that X-ray and ultrasound did not show any bladder stones, or any other anatomical abnormalities of her kidneys, bladder or urinary tract. With no physical answers as to what may be causing Lulu’s infections, and specifically what may be causing the UTI’s that didn’t respond to recent treatment, the veterinarian is hoping it was more of an environmental issue – because Lulu was living on a cattle farm as an outside farm dog during the day where she loved to swim in the pond with the cows, and was only drinking their well water that the owner said has not been tested. After another round of urine cultures here at Safe Haven and time living at the shelter, we are happy to say that the most recent test results now show Lulu appears to be heading in the right direction as she fights off her most recent infection that she came in with. Since these results point towards great news, and Lulu currently does not exhibit any symptoms of a UTI, the vet has taken her off of her medical hold, and cleared Lulu for adoption! We just need any potential adopter to be prepared to help Lulu through these health conditions as she ages because it is possible they could still be a lifelong struggle for her. Of course we are hopeful that all Lulu needed was a new environment, but what we do know for sure is she does need a family that is able to work closely with their vet to manage her health concerns as they arise, because it does take a considerable amount of time and a financial commitment to help pets through chronic health conditions like this. Lulu will certainly repay all this commitment with unwavering love and devotion…..as Bernedoodles are known to be incredibly loyal family dogs, as well as highly intelligent. Her new family will also need to be prepared for routine grooming every few months, and they would greatly benefit from taking Lulu to an obedience class as well. These classes help develop a great working bond with Lulu, helping her learn some basic obedience skills, build trust and continue building her social skills – all of this will help set her up for success in her new home and community! We just know there is a special family out there that is wililng to take all this on to help Lulu grow and mature into the adorable great dog she was meant to be! Interested in adopting this pet?
