Hi there, my name is Big Bird. I am a little Goffin's cockatoo with a big personality! I came to the SPCA because my family could no longer care for me. I can be a little shy at first, but once you spend some time with me you'll see my personality come out! I have a lot of energy and need toys to keep me occupied. I am quite vocal and love to greet my caretakers when they come hangout with me. I would do best in a home with someone who has experience with large exotic birds and is able to provide me with a nice big cage. Do I sound like a good fit for you? Schedule an appointment to come meet me soon! Goffin's cockatoos are intelligent, active, and fun-loving birds that require a lot of care and attention. It is important that when committing to taking care of an exotic bird for the entirety of its life that you are prepared for that commitment. The lifespan of a Goffin's cockatoo can be up to 30+ years with proper care. Exotic birds require annual vet exams much like a dog or cat. The Goffin's cockatoo has a reputation as a ‘quieter cockatoo,’ however, that's not to say that a Goffin's won't screech, especially if he wants your attention. A Goffin's cockatoo needs a spacious cage that should have perches at different heights. Your cockatoo should have at least three to four hours of supervised time outside of its cage each day. You can use a play stand for your cockatoo to play with toys, climb, and eat. You should provide a variety of toys that challenge your cockatoo, such as puzzle toys, rope toys, and toys that can be taken apart. You can also hide toys or treats for your cockatoo to find. Food for cockatoos should be nutritious, but should also include a foraging element as well.
